County to use Byrne grant funds for de‑escalation and peer support training

The committee unanimously approved accepting $51,738 in grant funds awarded under the Bureau of Justice Assistance FY2022-2023 Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program to support de-escalation and conflict-management training. Chief Meredith McGovern said the money will fund de-escalation training, peer support training for an internal Peer Support Program and Training Division travel to work with trainees.
McGovern explained the award year reads FY2022-2023 because some grants were not awarded until 2025, delaying disbursement. When asked whether peer support also covers de-escalation, McGovern clarified the peer support program focuses on internal employee support for issues such as alcoholism and family problems, while de-escalation training is a separate operational training function.
