Board OKs deed amendment to keep Long Mountain Park open in perpetuity under state grant

Parks staff updated the board on a six‑phase plan for Long Mountain Park and asked for permission to amend the park deed to satisfy a state grant condition that the property be maintained and open in perpetuity.
"The grant is, with estimated about $300,000. It's a 50/50 match," the parks presenter said, describing an award administered through the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and funded in part by the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. The funds are intended to pay for early phases including utilities, restroom installation and finishing the disc‑golf course.
Staff told the board $150,000 is already set aside in the CIP for the park and that the requested action was limited to the deed language required by the grant. The board moved to authorize the county administrator to amend the Long Mountain Park deed to include language that the park "will remain open in perpetuity as a public recreational space," and the motion passed on voice vote.
Next steps: staff will complete required documentation with DCR and proceed with grant administration and the planned first phases of site work once deed language and documentation are in place.
