Elko County commissioners unanimously approved Proclamation No. 2025‑513, declaring Nov. 17–21, 2025, as Crash Responder Safety Week, following a presentation from Nevada Highway Patrol officers asking the county to promote awareness of move‑over laws.
"Crash Responder Safety Week affords a unique opportunity for every traffic incident management community member to make a difference," Lieutenant Jeff Powell told commissioners, citing national trends in responders struck by vehicles. Powell and Sergeant Cruz Marin outlined that many motorists remain unaware of move‑over duties; Powell cited federal guidance and Nevada Revised Statute language directing drivers to decrease speed and, when possible, move over one lane when approaching traffic incidents.
Commissioners discussed national and local risks during road incidents and noted past local fatal incidents involving tow operators and roadside workers. Commissioner Delmo read the proclamation into the record and moved to approve it; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
The proclamation passage directs county staff to support public education during the designated week and encourages first responders and partner agencies to promote available traffic incident management training.
