Planning staff introduced a service plan for a proposed countywide Weed & Pest Abatement General Improvement District designed to coordinate responses to invasive weeds and pest outbreaks and to allow the county to enter cooperative agreements with land-management agencies and to pursue funding. Curtis Moore (presenter, S12) said the plan was broad and designed to provide a coordinated, county-level capability to respond to outbreaks that cross property boundaries.
Public commenters including Gerald Miller (S15) and representatives of local conservation districts urged the commission to support the plan, stressing county capacity gaps and the benefits of a staffed local weed-control program. The commission voted to direct staff to study the plan further and to prepare a recommended position for the County Commission, and to appoint a commissioner or staff member to carry the recommendation forward.
Next steps: staff to finalize a study and return with a recommendation and proposed appointee to present to the County Commission.
