Sheriff's office readies extra deputies, DUI patrols and fraud resource ahead of Sisters Rodeo

Lieutenant Davis of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office updated the council on public-safety preparations for the Sisters Rodeo and the summer events season. He said the sheriff’s office will assign extra city deputies during the week and weekend, increase DUI patrols, and coordinate with the Oregon State Police high-visibility traffic team on Highway 20.
“We’re getting ready for Sisters rodeo or kicking off our event season,” Lieutenant Davis said, adding that extra deputies and high-visibility patrols will work between Bend and Redmond to manage traffic and safety. He also described more routine enforcement: bike patrols while staffing allows and targeted enforcement for offensive littering sites and a visible Forest Service camp.
Davis highlighted investigative capability improvements: Deputy Mike Hudson, who has a banking background, recently completed a certified fraud examiner course and will serve as a local expert on scams and elder-abuse fraud investigations. “He will be a go-to expert not only for our team but the whole office,” Davis said, noting coordination with the FBI on cases that cross U.S. borders.
Councilors asked about e-bike and small electric-motorcycle enforcement during the discussion that followed; Davis described juvenile helmet and sidewalk-safety concerns and emphasized education and outreach to families when enforcement is not appropriate.
