Attorney: State law requires mandatory garbage pick-up in Geneva County; resident withdraws objection

A resident who said she does not live in Geneva County full time told the Commission she did not believe she should have to pay for mandatory trash pick-up. The board referred the matter to County Attorney Phil Eldridge, who cited state law.
Attorney Eldridge told the Commission that "garbage pick-up is mandatory in Geneva County per State Law Section 22-27-3 which states that every person, household, business, industry, or property generating garbage shall participate in and subscribe to the garbage system service and the Commission cannot grant exemptions." After Eldridge explained the legal requirement, Ms. Debra Brackin said she understood and was satisfied.
No exemption or policy change was made at the meeting. Commissioners asked staff to consider whether a county smoking policy should be developed separately and to continue routine solid-waste and billing oversight.
