Geneva County Commissioners voted May 27 to approve a 100% concept design for a covered multi-purpose arena and to begin advertising for construction. Presenters from JMR+H described the completed concept and cost estimates; the motion to approve carried 4-0.
Mike Rutland and Jeff Cahill of JMR+H presented the plan and cost breakdown. "The estimated cost for this initial phase is $1,388,579.00," the presentation stated. The designers outlined alternates — gutters, lighting, additional concrete and crushed stone — that would add an estimated $400,000–$500,000. Adding livestock panels and bucking shoots would be an additional approximately $130,000, and restrooms and concessions were not included in the current estimate.
Commissioner Weston Spivey moved to approve the design and start advertising; Commissioner Bart Wilks seconded. The motion passed on a 4-0 vote. The Commission did not adopt any of the alternates at this meeting; staff and designers said alternates could be staged into later construction phases.
Next steps identified by staff included preparing bid documents for the advertised advertisement and refining alternates and scope prior to bidding. Commissioners did not set a construction timeline at the meeting; the vote authorized advertisement only.
