Council adopts traffic ordinance to align local code with new state speeding penalties

Counsel said the state moved a 55-mile-per-hour threshold and removed distinctions that previously existed between different speed-zone tiers, and the city’s code needs to be amended so local enforcement aligns with state law.
"Our code needs to change to reflect that so we don't accidentally write a ticket for an offense that doesn't exist," the city attorney said, urging expedited consideration. Council moved to waive the usual two-consideration requirement, advanced the ordinance and adopted Ordinance 2026-07 by roll-call vote (motion carried 4–0). The change updates the city’s motor-vehicle code to conform to recent state statutory changes and staff said it will reduce potential conflicts between local and state enforcement options.
