Budget committee discusses reclassifying accountant, succession planning after retirement notice

The Elko County Budget Committee considered a request to reclassify the current Accountant 1 to Accountant 2 and discussed broader staffing and succession needs. Susan (finance staff) told the committee that the incumbent "has completed the 3 courses in governmental accounting through the University of Georgia to receive her certificate" and has set up the accounts-receivable module in the county's new financial system. Staff estimated the budgetary impact at "approximately $9,091 for the remainder of fiscal year 25," and said that amount could be absorbed in the finance budget because of a vacant grants-and-contracts coordinator position.

Committee members questioned whether similar reclassifications followed precedent and whether the matter should come through the budget process. One committee member urged caution about near-term fiscal pressures, saying the county's revenues appear to be flattening and that "we need to proceed with extreme caution going forward" because upcoming employer contribution increases for police and fire will affect the budget. Because a commissioner (Rex) was absent and wanted to participate, the committee "moved forward with no action" on the personnel items at this meeting and indicated the topics will be revisited when the full membership can participate.
