Residents tell Putnam County commissioners proposed quarry would harm health, wells and property

Several residents testified at the Nov. 20 special session against rezoning a parcel near Cloverdale to allow a quarry, citing health, environmental and safety concerns.
Jerry Collins said he worried about diseases and health issues tied to limestone dust. "The limestone in the air causes these issues," Collins said. Tracy Reed said her family has owned their property since the 1800s and told the board the new quarry could cause landslides and dry nearby wells, potentially affecting "50 plus families" and a "3 mile stretch" of homes.
Other residents described broken mailboxes and frequent wrecks on County Road 700 S.; Attorney Eddie Felling said neighbors received "little to no information" about the proposed operation. The persistent resident opposition was cited by the board in its decision to deny the rezoning request.
