Geneva County backs Brightspeed BEAD broadband application to expand fiber

Chairman Toby Seay introduced and the commission approved a letter of support for Brightspeed's BEAD (Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment) grant application. The letter, dated May 15, 2025, states Geneva County "is in full support of Brightspeed's proposed BEAD grant application, which will bring internet speeds of up to a maximum of 2/2 Gbps to homes, businesses and Community Anchor Institutions within the County."
The letter emphasizes broadband as an economic engine and says expanded service would provide residents with access to telemedicine, remote schooling and remote work opportunities many will access for the first time. Commissioner Weston Spivey moved to allow the chairman to send a letter of support; Commissioner Bart Wilks seconded and the motion passed 4-0. The signed letter is part of the meeting record.
