The sheriff said detectives opened 19 new cases last month and cleared eight; animal control and civil process volumes were also high. He linked much of the jail population and calls to mental-health crises, and said the new behavioral-health center now scheduled to open soon should help reduce some demand. Commissioners and members of the public questioned the apparent increase in coroner investigations; the sheriff attributed part of the rise to statutory requirements to send suicides, suspicious deaths and overdoses for autopsy.
