County to inventory brownfields and lead new countywide strategic plan with state grants

Cayuga County received a $160,000 Countywide BOA pre-planning grant and $103,500 for a new Countywide Strategic Plan; the BOA project began April 1 for 24 months and the strategic-plan project began April 1 for 36 months and will be produced in-house by county planning staff.
Planner Nathaniel Rogers and Director Kari Terwilliger reported the county will use a $160,000 Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) pre-planning grant to map underutilized, vacant and abandoned commercial and industrial buildings (excluding the City of Auburn) and identify clusters for future state BOA designation. The 24-month project began April 1 and will fund consultant services through a 90/10 state/county match.
Separately, the county was awarded $103,500 to produce a new Countywide Strategic Plan, a 36-month effort to be completed in-house by Planning Department staff with state reimbursement covering 90% of costs and the county covering 10% through staff time and budgeted expenses. Both projects are intended to guide future development, downtown revitalization and resource protection countywide.
