The House approved the senate substitute for HB 1715 (SB 1893), which provides a jury-service exemption for new mothers who are breastfeeding if they provide a statement from a doctor or midwife. Chairman Hill told members the bill was brought to him by an election administrator and that the exemption would be implemented upon passage.
"What this bill would do, it would grant an exemption for from jury duty to new mothers who are breastfeeding," Chairman Hill said during his floor presentation. The clerk recorded a constitutional majority in favor, and the presiding officer declared the bill passed on final consideration.
The bill includes a procedural requirement for medical documentation; supporters characterized it as an accommodation for childcare and maternal needs rather than a broad opt-out from jury service.
