Sandy board weighs shelter upgrades, hears $8,000 and $16,000 cost estimates

Andy Howe, transit director for the City of Sandy, noted an existing shelter was damaged and "we got a quote recently because we have a shelter sitting out there that we have not put up, but the quote was 8,000 just to place it on the existing path and put it together." He said a heavy-duty shelter is desired at the Bell and 62nd intersection but that placement will likely wait until the intersection is redeveloped.
The board also discussed more durable wooden shelter designs with solar panels on top, which staff reported were quoted at about $16,000. Andy said the higher price may be worth it for a few signature shelters and described exploring developer or merchant contributions and potential advertising as possible funding sources, while emphasizing a preference to avoid excessive street-level ads. Board members raised right‑of‑way and ODOT constraints as factors in siting and funding decisions.
