Commissioners approve paying $5,200 Westville autopsy bill pending legal review

Paul Foster presented a county invoice for an autopsy performed on an individual who died at Westville Correctional Facility and asked the board how to handle the charge.
Foster explained the county typically pays for autopsies it orders and that this case differed because the person had been incarcerated in the county but died in another facility; the bill sent to the county was $5,200 compared with the normal $2,200 autopsy cost cited in testimony. "This is a rare occurrence," Commissioner Drew Markel said, describing the request as outside the county's typical patterns. "I would be fine with paying this out of the commissioner's budget and the Professional Fees line item," Markel said.
Commissioner Matt Reedy moved to pay the bill from the commissioners' budget pending County Attorney Susan Bevers' legal review; Commissioner Bob Gillaspy seconded and the motion carried with three yes votes. The county will proceed after the attorney's review and record the expenditure in the commissioners' Professional Fees line item.
