Lincoln Public Schools presented a broad athletics and activities update at its July 28 board meeting, reporting higher participation across programs and a near‑universal graduation rate among student participants.
Dr. JJ Tocek, director of athletics and activities, told the board the district’s four‑year average participation rose 16 percent and highlighted several standouts: “from when we started during the 2022–23 season until this current year, we are up 64%” in girls wrestling and Unified Sports participation is up 40%. He also noted that the four‑year on‑time graduation rate for students involved in athletics and activities was 99 percent for the class of 2025.
Board members asked staff to provide comparative data and disaggregated participation numbers by race/ethnicity and free/reduced‑price lunch status to better evaluate equity and access. Dr. Tocek said the district is collecting more detailed surveys from coaches and students as part of an EverRise pilot designed to strengthen coach‑student relationships and improve outcomes.
The presentation framed activities as part of the district’s educational strategy rather than only extracurricular enrichment. “We wanna be able to aid the overall growth by promoting academic achievement, skill development, life skills, citizenship,” Dr. Tocek said, tying athletics and activities back to classroom priorities. The board thanked staff for the report and invited them to return with the requested disaggregated data and comparisons to peers.
