U.S. Census Bureau webinar walks users through data.census.gov filters, mapping and access options

The U.S. Census Bureau hosted a webinar on methods for finding and using Census Bureau data, with training specialist Crystal Jimerson opening the session and data dissemination specialist Kira Obradovich demonstrating the agency’s tools.
Obradovich said attendees should begin searches by identifying their "non-negotiables" — the exact survey, geography, topic or recency they must use — and then use data.census.gov's filters to confirm whether that combination is available. "Start with what you're required to use, then be a little flexible," she said, adding that data dissemination specialists are assigned to regions and can provide free training and help (census.askdata@census.gov).
The webinar covered three practical paths for data users: (1) filters in data.census.gov and the address search to pull in exact geographies; (2) the Microdata Access Tool (MDAT) to inspect survey variables and code values before requesting tables; and (3) the Federal Statistical Research Data Centers (RDCs) for approved access to restricted microdata. Jimerson said the recording and supplemental materials will be uploaded to the Census Academy site within 30 business days.
Presenters urged users to consult survey pages for questionnaires and technical documentation and to contact a data dissemination specialist when a desired variable or geography is not visible in the tools. The session concluded with a question-and-answer period demonstrating mapping and the process for finding datasets not publicly posted.
