Consultants and staff laid out the technical rationale for redesigning the Hiatus Road intersection, citing a 10‑year review that shows more than double the average crashes at this location compared with the citywide per‑intersection average. Akunu Bridal, the city's utilities director and acting city engineer, told attendees that traffic signal and four‑way stop warrants failed and that speed humps are prohibited by roadway classification, leaving a roundabout as the geometric option engineers consider effective.
Police data presented by the department indicated that, over the study period cited, nine of the crashes were left‑turn related and eight were angle collisions—types the police said could be reduced by intersection geometry changes. "Left turn was the dominating cause followed by angle," the captain said when reading crash classifications drawn from deputy crash reports submitted to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Engineers cautioned that a reduced posted speed alone often does not change driver behavior unless lane widths or the roadway geometry are modified.
