Howard County to Install Two New Backup Generators; Court Discusses Pad, Utilities and Fencing

Howard County commissioners heard staff describe plans to remove an existing metal building and an older generator and to install two new backup generators on a newly poured concrete pad. "So we'll need to pour a new concrete pad, for the 2 new ones," the Chair said, summarizing staff recommendations for site prep and noting the existing pad will be removed.
Road and Bridge staff said the new generators are roughly 12 feet each and will need clear space between the courthouse steps and a nearby transformer. "They're gonna have to have space to put 2 of those in that area between the steps and that transformer," a Road and Bridge representative said, and staff urged utility-line locates and gas-line checks before final measurements. Commissioners discussed whether to fence the enlarged footprint, how tall a fence could be without blocking clerk's-office sight lines, and whether to include a gate and storage inside the fenced area.
The court did not take formal action on fencing at the meeting; the Chair said commissioners would review the site in the coming weeks and Road & Bridge would begin removing the old equipment the next morning. Commissioners directed staff to coordinate well-plate locations and confirm whether the vendor's prebuilt concrete slabs would be included in the generator price, leaving final fencing decisions for a later item or site visit.
