Hemphill County approves $2,400 annual pay increase for employees and elected officials; commissioners excluded

During a budget workshop, Judge Lisa Johnson outlined proposed line-item changes intended to fund a flat $2,400 annual raise for employees and elected officials (commissioners excluded). Johnson said she increased expected interest on the General Fund revenue from $200,000 to $400,000, reduced the Road Repair line by $100,000 because there were no TXDOT road grant funds from the legislature, and added the $2,400 increase at a cost of $145,770; she said adding the commissioners would cost about $12,000 more. Johnson told the court she "has increased our Ad Valorem tax levy by $60,007 and that this would leave our tax rate the same."
Following discussion, Commissioner Tim Alexander moved to approve the $2,400 annual flat-rate salary increase for employees and elected officials (commissioners excluded); Commissioner Dawn Webb seconded the motion and it carried unopposed. The court’s changes to anticipated interest and the Road Repair line were presented as the offsets to pay for the increase; staff will incorporate the approved change into the county budget and reconcile with the District Court budget when received.
