Commissioner Kevin Burns told the Court that a major portion of County Road 1536, which runs between two rock companies including Martin Marietta, has not been maintained in about 15 years because of safety issues and illegal dumping. To preserve future utility between Highway 101 and State Road 2952 while discouraging through traffic, Burns proposed moving the gate closer to State Road 2952 and ceasing maintenance on the identified segment except for emergency access.
The Court approved Burns' proposal by motion, with Commissioner Danny Lambert seconding; the motion was recorded as unanimously adopted. The map referenced in the motion will be attached to the minutes and describe the exact portion of roadway affected.
The action preserves the road's potential future use while responding to ongoing safety and dumping concerns. Officials did not abandon the road; they ceased routine maintenance on the major portion identified by the map and ordered gate relocation as a deterrent to public driving beyond the gate.
