Planning commission unanimously recommends clarifying sign regulations

The Social Circle Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval of staff's proposed amendments to the city's sign regulations on July 28.
Ashley, the city representative, said the amendments to UDC sections 10.1 and 15.2 clarify definitions (for example, distinguishing ground and monument signs), specify dimensional rules, and better define which signage requires a permit. She told commissioners the changes aim to reduce confusion among businesses and expedite sign permit processing. "Ground signs shall be limited to a maximum height of 8 feet and shall be anchored to a permanent foundation," staff advised; commissioners asked staff to add explicit language that foundations be designed specifically for signs.
The commission discussed enforcement and temporary signs, and staff said code enforcement has been actively resolving noncompliant subdivision signage and that the city holds removed signs at city hall. No members of the public signed up to speak. The commission moved, seconded and voted unanimously to recommend approval; the recommendation will go to mayor and council for final adoption.
