Wabaunsee County to seek state bridge grants; volunteers two small bridges for removal

Road & Bridge Supervisor Josh Hinch reviewed a ranked list of candidate bridges provided by CFS Engineers. The commission decided to apply for Bridge #235 in Rock Creek Township as a Rural Secondary project and Bridge #102 (off Old K‑4, west of Chalk Road) as the county's KLBIP candidate. Commissioners discussed that Bridge #640 is already let for bids and would be inappropriate for the current application because it would delay that project.
Commissioners also agreed to volunteer Bridge #8 (Greenwood Road near Wells Creek Road) and Bridge #60 (the wooden structure over railroad tracks in Alta Vista) for removal from inventory, a step that counties may take to qualify for an additional $50,000 toward a KLBIP award. Commissioner Nancy Hier asked for a separate follow-up on Bridge #108 on Elm Creek Road; Hinch said he would contact the oil company that uses that route the following week.
The decision was framed as an application strategy: choosing projects that are eligible and that will not delay already-scheduled work.
