Public works reports staffing losses, compactor issues and landfill fuel limits

During the March 9 meeting Sheldon (Public Works) told commissioners two public-works employees will be leaving and provided pay-scale comparisons from surrounding counties. He reported compactor fuel-system problems and said crews are hauling caliche and rock in preparation for upcoming projects.
Sheldon asked permission for he and Todd to attend the Spring Road KCHA conference May 3–6 in Hutchinson; the commission approved attendance by motion. He also requested moving employee Caden Jackson into the assistant mechanic position. Sheldon said the landfill’s diesel cannot be contracted because Hampel owns the tanks and therefore will not enter into a contract to supply diesel, a constraint the commissioners noted when considering equipment operations. Commissioners asked Sheldon to check local tire vendors for procurement options after a citizen complaint about County Road C was relayed.
