"I decided that I would convene another 5 plus 1 meeting after adequate preparations on confidence building, methodology, and substance," he said during a press briefing in Cyprus.
He said the decision followed frank discussions with the two leaders and consultation with guarantor states, and emphasized that the meeting should produce results rather than be a formality. The Secretary‑General noted previous talks hosted by the United Nations in Geneva, Kras Montana (2017), Berlin (2019), Geneva (2021), and meetings in New York and Geneva in 2024 and 2025 to underline continuity of the process. He also said his personal envoy, Maria Angela Olgin, has been engaging with the parties and civil society to prepare for meaningful negotiations.
Asked whether there is a deadline for the 5+1 meeting, he replied that no deadline has been defined and that preparations will proceed "as fast and as effectively as possible." The Secretary‑General said the UN will work in consultation with the two sides and the guarantors to create the conditions for a successful meeting.
