Jackson County staff say landfill catch pond will need replacement; engineering and permitting estimated about $50,000

Road & Bridge Director Scott Kieffaber told the Board that the landfill's existing catch pond will surpass its limitations this year and presented options from BG Engineering estimating engineering and permitting costs at about $50,000. Scott said the BG proposals offered 25-45 years of use or options that would double the life of the landfill.
Scott said county employees could construct the pond with existing equipment and that funds exist in the landfill capital outlay to cover the cost. Commissioner Keith Kelly questioned whether continuing a construction debris pit is worthwhile versus transitioning to a transfer station given hauling costs and potential dumping in rights-of-way; Chairman Pruett raised concerns about hauling costs. Pruett suggested soliciting bids for the engineering proposals.
No formal procurement action was recorded at the meeting; staff were directed to get engineering bids for consideration.
