Kingsburg High band wins at Visalia; choir readies winter concerts and equipment needs

Kingsburg High School's music programs reported renewed strength post-COVID at the board's Oct. 14 meeting. Marching Band Instructor Mike Schofield told trustees the Kingsburg Viking Marching Band and Color Guard took First Place, Best Music, Best Color Guard, Best Visual Performance and Best General Effect at last weekend's Visalia Band Invitational, and that Jazz Band and Marching Band participation totals about 116 students. Schofield also said the program received a donated semi equipment truck last year and expects additional grant-funded brass instruments.
Choir Director Stephen Sawatsky said the women's choir will have new outfits purchased for approximately $2,500 and that the department hopes to acquire a grand piano in the future, noting used instruments can cost around $60,000. During public comment, community member Chris Peterson thanked Sawatsky for his leadership and instruction, saying, “I think he is a great teacher and instructor.” The choir's next concert is scheduled for Dec. 16, according to the presentation materials.
