Commission recommends clarifications to city sign code to tighten definitions and enforcement

The Social Circle Planning Commission on July 28 recommended amending the Unified Development Code's sign provisions to provide clearer definitions and improve enforceability.
Staff said the proposed text changes to UDC section 10.1 will better distinguish ground and monument signs, clarify what signage requires a permit and what qualifies as temporary or election signage, and align dimensional standards across zoning districts. "The primary section of the UDC that staff is proposing to be amended is section 10.1.0.5, which regulates the types of signage that are permitted within each zoning district," the city representative said in the presentation.
Commissioners questioned technical details such as foundation requirements for ground signs and scenarios in which multiple sign faces or attachments might exceed an allowed area. Staff responded that ground signs must be separately founded and that code enforcement has already been tightening compliance with temporary and subdivision signage. No members of the public signed up to speak on the sign amendments, and the commission voted unanimously to recommend approval to mayor and council.
