Project to procure DMU trains and add maintenance capacity, presenters say

UTA representatives told the council the Frontrunner 2X program will likely procure diesel multiple unit (DMU) vehicles, requiring about 10 additional trains and a maintenance facility capable of servicing the new technology.
During the presentation, City Administrator David Bunker asked whether the new equipment would be the same as existing locomotive-hauled trains. Janelle Robertson confirmed the project is likely to procure diesel multiple units and explained that DMUs are "self-propelled, lighter, and more fuel-efficient, with propulsion systems contained within the vehicle." She said DMUs generally have slightly lower per-unit capacity but can be coupled to increase train length if needed, and that a maintenance facility capable of servicing the different technology would be required.
Robertson and Carter noted that procurement choices aim for forward compatibility: vehicles are being chosen to allow later transitions to hybrid-electric or battery systems as technology evolves. Robertson said the project would need roughly 10 additional trainsets to support increased frequency and that maintenance facilities will be part of further design discussions.
