UTA outlines $3.2 billion Frontrunner 2X plan to double peak service

UTA Project Manager Janelle Robertson told the American Fork City Council and Planning Commission that the Frontrunner 2X project is designed to expand capacity and reliability along the 83-mile Frontrunner corridor. Robertson said the system now operates at "approximately 90% capacity during peak hours" and that the project would "nearly double service to 15-minute peak service and 30-minute off-peak service." She said the program includes 11 double-tracking segments, a new station at Bluffdale in the Point of the Mountain area, and a Warm Springs Yard track realignment to increase speeds in that zone.
Robertson said the total project cost is "approximately $3.2 billion," a figure that includes a 40% contingency required by the Federal Transit Administration. She told the council that about $840 million in state funding has already been allocated, which is why UDOT is managing construction and procurement, while UTA will ultimately own and operate the system. Robertson added that the project anticipates adding roughly 10 additional trains and that the vehicles under consideration are diesel multiple units (DMUs).
