The Select Board read a prepared statement condemning the appearance of antisemitic, racist and obscene graffiti on private property on July 22 and asked anyone with information to contact the police. "Expressions of hate have no place in Westford and do not reflect our shared values of inclusion," the statement said, adding the police are investigating the acts as a hate crime.
Joe Diamond, co-chair of the town DEI committee, told the board the committee appreciates the statement and police action, urged ongoing outreach and education with schools and suggested the incident be reported to national civil-rights groups as appropriate. "We join you in condemning such acts and all acts of intolerance," Diamond said, and asked the board to pursue curriculum partnerships and outreach ahead of the school year. Board members and others in attendance echoed support for the statement and emphasized reporting and community vigilance.
