Stony Brook update: monthly grading, new land steward and patrols reported

Acting staff gave the board a status update on the Stony Brook Conservation Area, describing routine maintenance, public-safety patrols and staffing plans. The town has started monthly grading of roads and parking areas and contracted removal of dangerous trees when procurement allowed; two summer camps are operating on the property. "Since May, we've had 22 bike and ATV patrols and 91 total property checks," staff reported, and said there have been no calls for service in that period.
The town also announced a new public land steward position, budgeted for about $7,500 and estimated to amount to approximately 270 hours; the role is intended as education and ambassadorship rather than enforcement. "He's going to essentially greet people, inform them of the rules ... maintain daily logs," the presenter said, naming the hire and outlining plans to evaluate performance by contact counts, police checks and animal-control reports. The working group approved earlier in May will focus initially on stabilization — maintaining buildings and camp safety — with membership recommendations to the town manager to follow.
