Commissioners discussed a proposal to create a Public Safety Director position that would consolidate emergency management responsibilities and improve cross-agency training and planning.
Commissioner (speaker 15) framed the position as a way to “eliminate duplication and improve efficiency,” citing National Incident Management System principles and a desire to have multiple public-safety agencies train under a unified command. He said the role would incorporate EMA responsibilities so the county has a single point for disaster response coordination.
County manager (speaker 4) told commissioners the position would not require a budget increase for the current fiscal year, saying, “we feel confident that we can hire this new position and not directly affect this year's budget,” citing temporary savings and recently created positions that freed funding. Copies of the job description were distributed and commissioners were invited to raise questions before the formal vote on the evening agenda.
