Iron County closes on 1,104.91-acre Gile Flowage property; committee discusses campground and access improvements

Forest Administrator Eric Peterson informed the committee that Iron County closed on the 1,104.91-acre Gile Flowage property on Dec. 30, 2025. Peterson said county staff submitted reimbursement documentation to WCMP on Jan. 5 and received a $4.1 million check on Jan. 12; he also said he plans to submit paperwork for a separate K-N grant reimbursement of $1.5 million as soon as possible.
The committee discussed potential public uses for the property. Peterson noted staff may improve the road to the site of the old Oma Town Park and remove an old outhouse this summer; members raised the possibility of establishing a campground at the old park location and debated how to manage camping on islands in the flowage. No formal decision or appropriation was made at the meeting.
