Lyon County approves $12,000 sales-tax allocation for The Wall that Heals display

The Lyon County Commission on Feb. 20 approved a $12,000 allocation from sales tax fund 017-00-9811 to support The Wall that Heals display at the Emporia American Legion.
Representatives from The Wall that Heals — Ed Rathke, Richelle Birk and Clay Childs — told the commission they are continuing a local fundraising campaign and invited commissioners to a March 29 kick-off at the American Legion from noon to 5 p.m. They said, "The wall will arrive on August 12, 2025 and once set up will be on display August 14-17, 2025." The board recorded the motion to allocate funds (Peck/Bartel) and approved it 3-0.
Supporters in the meeting thanked commissioners for backing the project; Gary Post of the Emporia Lions Club presented tickets to an upcoming Lions Club event as a token of thanks. The allocation was drawn from the county’s sales tax fund (account 017-00-9811) and recorded as a routine budget transfer in the meeting minutes.
Next steps: organizers will proceed with the kick-off fundraising event and logistics for the August display; the county's finance staff will process the transfer from the sales tax account.
