Board weighs approved communication platforms and exceptions for athletics and trips

District counsel described acceptable channels for staff–student communication outside the normal course of instruction: district staff and student email, ParentSquare (so parents can be copied), and Hudl for athletics. Counsel said the policy aims to minimize direct texting and personal phone calls between staff and students and to have parents view outside communication."We started with email. District email is appropriate for staff to email students," General Counsel Aka said, and she added that ParentSquare allows parents to be included on communications.
Board members pointed out practical exceptions such as athletics (coaches using specific apps), international trips where district email may not function, and temporary outages. Aka said the district consulted athletics and community programs and will include language allowing reasonable exceptions when needed while encouraging use of district-approved platforms and parent inclusion. The board asked staff to add a procedure for granting exceptions and to include training for staff and contracted partners who have frequent student contact.
