Committee refers detailed cyberbullying draft to administration and counsel
Summary

Chair introduced a detailed draft addition to policy JCDAF aimed at addressing cyberbullying and electronic harassment in the district. The draft would allow discipline when online bullying is documented and classifies sharing another student’s likeness or inappropriate images as a level 3 or level 4 offense depending on severity.
Several members sought clarity about whether the draft had been integrated into the district’s formal policy manual; presenters confirmed the current policy remained live and the cyberbullying language existed only as an attachment and had not been reviewed by administration. One board member asked whether administration had a recommendation; administration answered that it had not seen the draft and had not reviewed it.
Given the lack of an administratively-reviewed, adoptable policy document, Mister Duncan moved — and the board seconded — a referral of the draft to administration and the board attorney with instructions to prepare a policy that can be considered at the next policy committee meeting. The motion passed on roll call.
Board members asked that the attorney review the language and that administration present a clean, adoptable draft showing insertions and deletions alongside the existing JCDAF policy. The committee emphasized the urgency but also the need to get legal and procedural details right before adoption.
