Beth Clinker of Paola told the Miami County Board of County Commissioners she was submitting a 29-page petition with 169 signatures opposing a proposed zoning change that would reclassify about 50 acres of Hillsdale farmland to commercial use. "Rezoning 50 acres of countryside farmland to commercial would permanently alter the character of the Hillsdale community," Clinker said, adding residents are concerned about traffic, noise and infrastructure impacts.
Clinker said neighbors collected signatures door-to-door and expected to deliver additional petitions at the board's July 29 meeting. Kenny Cook of the Miami County Planning Department told commissioners the statutory protest period closed at 4:30 p.m. the previous day and that signatures submitted after that deadline are not counted toward the legal protest threshold, but "we will usually include them with our staff report so that you are aware of the concerns," Cook said. Cook said staff will verify whether the petition reaches the 20% protest threshold by the end of the week.
