The board approved the creation of a new public safety director position to serve as a county liaison with public-safety agencies, oversee E-911 and the county marshals, and assume responsibilities as emergency management agency (EMA) director.
County staff described the role as a way to "break down some of the silos and then and allow for some unilateral, training and policies, and work, hand in hand." Staff told commissioners the new position would not affect current budgets and that funding exists within the county's present budget to accommodate the role. The motion to approve the position passed by voice vote.
The board did not identify an appointee at the meeting; staff said further hiring and position details will return to the board as the process advances.
