Commissioners weigh $3,000 muxboxes and tower work to fix dispatch gaps

Dispatch staff told the board that two mux boxes on Radio Hill remain to be replaced and estimated unit costs "about 3,000 apiece." Staff said those boxes are responsible for transferring audio from the dispatch center to the tower and linked continued reception problems to the remaining non-trunked sites.
Commissioners and public-safety staff discussed making the site a trunking site and raising the Wolf Mountain tower to meet state standards. "If we get this to be a trunking site, then everybody goes to trunking then that issue will be gone," a committee member said. Commissioners noted a lease or land-ownership check would be required where tower modifications sit on trust land and that the state might cover the upgrade if the towers meet its criteria.
Next steps: staff will pursue bids for mux replacements, continue talks with the state about trunking and follow up on any BIA lease needs before committing funds.
