Project to add DMU trains and a maintenance facility; about 10 trains needed

UTA staff said Frontrunner 2X will likely procure diesel multiple unit (DMU) vehicles, require roughly 10 additional trains and a maintenance facility capable of servicing the new vehicle type.
During the presentation, Janelle Robertson told council members the project foresees using diesel multiple unit vehicles rather than traditional locomotive-hauled trains. "DMUs are self-propelled, lighter, and more fuel-efficient, with propulsion systems contained within the vehicle," Robertson said.
UTA staff said the service increase will require roughly 10 additional trainsets and that the vehicles may have slightly lower capacity per set but can be coupled together to add capacity. Council members and staff discussed the need for a maintenance facility capable of servicing the different technology; Robertson said such a facility would be required as part of the program.
