Council adopts updated code of conduct with social‑media guidance

The Isleton City Council approved an updated code of conduct on Dec. 9 that adds guidance on elected officials' online activity, training expectations and other updates to reflect current practice. Staff said the prior policy dated from 2008 and that modernization was recommended in response to recent findings and to provide clearer expectations for council members.
The city attorney described the draft as sufficiently general and not unduly restrictive of free speech, and council members expressed support for the update. "It's not restricting your freedom of speech anyway, but you are a member of the council, so you should account for online activity," City Attorney Cameron said during the discussion. A motion to adopt the code as presented was moved and seconded and carried on roll call.
