Council awards materials-testing contract for three school sites to Aardvark

The East Greenwich Town Council approved a contract award on Jan. 12 for materials testing and inspection services at three school construction sites, accepting the school construction committee’s recommendation to select Aardvark Geotechnical Engineering and Testing.
Project staff told the council four responsive bids were received and staff evaluated unit pricing and staffing availability; project director Chris Spiegel explained the process and read the comparative estimated totals, saying they received bids from Aardvark (about $170,000), UTS of Mass ($267,740), Briggs Engineering ($227,535) and Prime Consulting ($191,007.15). Spiegel described materials testing as a due-diligence function that “takes samples of the concrete as it's being poured, and then they monitor it over months” to ensure specified strength and compaction standards are met. The school construction committee reviewed the proposals and recommended the Aardvark award; the council approved the resolution by a unanimous vote.
