Town to offer property-fraud alert service after council approves software purchase

The council approved an award to Catalyst for a property-fraud alert module to integrate with the town's e-recording land-records system. Town Clerk Lee Carney told the council she had researched the product after residents raised concerns about deed fraud; she cited national FBI numbers and title-industry reports showing fraud attempts have increased in recent years.
The contract covers installation and the initial annual maintenance fee for $9,720, with an ongoing maintenance cost of $730 per year. The module will allow property owners to register and receive alerts when documents are recorded that match their registered criteria; the clerk said alerts link residents to the recorded document so they can review it and, if needed, notify police. The council voted 5-0 to approve the contract using the document-preservation and technology-upgrade fund.
