MPS reports 5,100 summer school enrollees and funds Twilight Centers with city, county, and district dollars

At the meeting the superintendent reported summer programming metrics and funding sources for evening and recreation programs the district runs.
"Summer school has ended, and we had about 5,100 students in summer school," Brenda Caselli told the board. She said the district’s Twilight Centers and evening programs — designed to provide safe spaces and activities — had about 2,000 total visits as of the prior week. Caselli credited partnerships with the county, the Urban League and other local organizations for program delivery.
Caselli outlined funding: the city contributed $500,000, the county $500,000, and MPS allocated about $2,000,000 in the recreation budget to staff and maintain spaces. Board members praised the partnerships and suggested exploring internship or contract provisions with other public agencies to create student work opportunities tied to large city contracts; OAE’s Matt Chasen said his team had met with Common Council members to explore opportunities.
The board did not take separate action on summer programming during this meeting; administrators said they will continue to expand and evaluate participation and partnerships.
