Council approves emergency resolution to accept funds for two school resource officers

The council approved Resolution No. 26-R-691 (emergency), authorizing the city manager to enter a memorandum of understanding and accept monies from the Columbiana Exempted Village School District to fund wages and related benefits for two school resource officers assigned to district schools. The resolution language read into the record specified the funds are to be used "exclusively for wages and related benefits to permit the city of Columbiana police department to assign 2 school resource officers, SRO, at the school district schools."
Council moved and approved the emergency resolution by roll call. Members indicated they view the approach as a funding mechanism to ensure SRO positions are covered through agreement with the school district; the resolution was adopted during the same session in which several other emergency resolutions and ordinances were considered.
