Residents raise speeding, taxes, election concerns and praise Hurricane Helene response during public comment

During the public comment period at the Oct. 15 Houston County commission meeting, multiple residents addressed a range of community concerns. Lawrence Wright asked the board to address speeding on Pheasant Ridge Drive, expressed concern about rising property taxes and the number of apartment buildings being developed. Thomas Reynolds asked about the status of his tax appeal and requested exemptions from school taxes for seniors and residents without school-age children.
Two speakers, Terrie Kubasiak and Meg Mehserle, raised concerns about voting and the election process. HEMA/Fire Chief Chris Stoner described Hurricane Helene’s impact in Georgia and thanked local businesses, churches, elected officials and public safety agencies for their support. Daryl Allen spoke in support of Mehserle and reiterated concerns about the building industry. Chairman Perdue closed public comments after the speakers and the meeting proceeded to commissioner remarks.
“[Chief Stoner] spoke about Hurricane Helene’s impact in Georgia and the enormous outpouring of support,” the record states; the board did not take policy action on the citizen requests during the meeting, and several items (tax appeals, election administration concerns, traffic enforcement) would require follow-up by county staff or other agencies.
