Planning Commission adopts updated sign rules, asks for visual examples and tweaks

The Ludlow Planning Commission voted unanimously Feb. 25 to adopt revised town sign regulations, including provisions on materials, lighting and a "sunset" clause for upgraded lighting on remodeled buildings. Jean Strong moved to accept the regulations with edits recommended by the Planning and Zoning office and Jarrod Jowdy; Ted Stryhas seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Chair Terry Carter said the revisions will be integrated into the Town Zoning Regulations and can be amended later if needed. Sign maker Todd Fillmore, who addressed the commission during the discussion, said the town should allow modern materials and flexible lighting, noting, "I understand that Ludlow is a small town and the board wants to maintain small town character." Staff member Jarrod Jowdy explained the proposed historic-preservation carve-out and the new sunset clause that would require lighting to meet current standards when businesses remodel. The commission asked Fillmore to supply photo examples and agreed to review dimming and color-temperature details next month.
