Commission sends Fitzgerald plaque language back to SHPO for naming guidance, motion approved

The commission debated how to reference LDS/Mormon identities on the proposed Fitzgerald plaque. One commissioner raised the question of whether to use historical usage or current preferred naming conventions. "I think most organizations have a style guide that they use... the church would like people to use the full name of the church at first reference, which is just impractical for a plaque," one member said, while another noted historical usage: "Historically, they were called Mormons."
The chair proposed sending Wendy’s proposed language back to the State Historic Preservation Office for requested revisions and to ask SHPO which naming practice is best for a plaque. A motion to approve Wendy's language with the understanding that SHPO would review naming guidance was made and seconded; the chair asked for a voice vote and the motion carried with 'Aye' votes recorded. Staff will forward the language to SHPO and return any guidance to the commission.
